Introducing the AWARE Awards

AWARE turns 26 this year, and we plan to have ball of a time to celebrate the many milestones we have achieved this year.

Some of our proudest accomplishments this year include:

  • The launch of a new Sexual Assault Befrienders Service
  • Expanded Helpline, counselling and Legal Clinic services that now reach out to more women than ever
  • And the submission of our third CEDAW Shadow Report to the United Nations.

So mark your calendars for Monday October 17, when we celebrate all these achievements and the encouraging efforts by many others to improve gender equality in Singapore.

Interested sponsors can find more details about sponsorship packages for our Big Ball here.

Show your support for AWARE by showing up for a fun-filled evening at the Grand Hyatt Singapore! We promise good food, great company, and performances from some of Singapore’s most beloved entertainers.

We will also be launching the inaugural AWARE Awards at our Big Ball.

Is there a person who has inspired you by making women’s lives better? Who has stood out by standing up for gender equality? Someone whose actions deserve attention and celebration?

We want to know who they are. AWARE wants to celebrate the men and women who have defied gender barriers and made a difference by nurturing a culture of gender equality in Singapore.

Tell us your nominations for these three categories:

  • The AWARE
    Heroine

    For a woman

  • The AWARE
    Hero

    For a man

  • The AWARE
    Young Wonder

For a young person of either gender under 30 years old

THE ALAMAK! AWARDS

For those who prefer to see the glass as half-empty, nominations are also open for the Alamak! Awards.

These honours – or should we say dubious honours – will be bestowed on people who have helped to cement gender stereotypes and who have delighted in sexist practices. So do your part for gender equality by telling us who deserves to win the Alamak! Awards.

Judges Panel

The winners will be chosen by our judging panel, which comprises AWARE board member and education entrepreneur Lindy Ong, playwright Eleanor Wong, journalist Ong Soh Chin, academic Philip Holden and ambassador-at-large Professor Tommy Koh.

The shortlisted nominees for the AWARE Awards will be announced in September, and we will announce the winners at our AWARE’s Big Ball 2011 in October.

Submit Your Nominations

You can nominate as many individuals as you like for both the AWARE Awards and the Alamak! Awards.

Simply go to this link and fill out all the required information.

All nominations must be submitted by August 31, 2011.

Performeners AWAREs Big Ball

PAM OEI – EMCEE

Pam has been in over 50 theatre, television and film productions. Her theatre credits include Animal Farm, Rent and Boeing Boeing.

She is probably most known on stage for being one third of the delicious Dim Sum Dollies.

In June 2010, she produced, directed and performed in Superwomen in Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall, a memorable all-women’s concert which turned out to be AWARE’s most successful fund-raiser ever.

ADRIAN PANG – PERFORMER

Adrian became known to Singaporeans for his lead role in Glen Goei’s disco movie Forever Fever. He is well-loved by audiences for his TV roles in both serious and comedic English and Chinese dramas, as well as for his award-winning performances in theatre productions like Hamlet, The Pillowman and The Dresser. Adrian and his wife Tracie are Artistic Directors of PANGDEMONiUM! PRODUCTIONS.

Adrian is recognised as a devoted father who frequently ends his messages in the “about” section with: “But all the above nonsense is nothing when compared to his favourite role of all time – Daddy to his two sons, Zack and Xander”.

WENDI KOH – PERFORMER

Heralded as one of Singapore’s most versatile, entertaining and sensational female personalities, Wendi has dazzled her audiences with slick dance moves, powerful vocals and her “I-feel-good!” stage presence.

This hyperactive artiste has toured extensively throughout South-east Asia and graced most of the major night clubs in Singapore with her explosive acts. Her talents extend to music and vocal arrangement and production, as well as voice instruction and vocal performance training.

MICHAELA THERESE – PERFORMER

With a brand-new EP “Michaela” released in December 2010, this “clever and powerful” vocalist, pianist, song-writer and teacher continues to break familiar moulds within the region. With original songs and arrangements that establish her true unique jazz-influenced R&B style, Michaela aims to take us on a journey through her life and show us exactly why she is where she is today.

Michaela was recently voted one of the Top 10 Live Acts in Singapore by Life! Straits Times.
