Catalyse

RISE to Thrive

Catalyse, AWARE’s corporate training arm, has a two-pronged mandate:

i. It partners with organisations to build Respectful, Inclusive, Safe and Empathic (RISE) cultures, where people can truly maximise their potential.
ii. It generates profits to support AWARE’s Gender Equality services and programmes.

2021 was a record-breaking year for Catalyse in terms of number of workshops, products, number of people trained, revenue and profit.

Revenue doubled from 2020 to 2021, in part due to the widespread acceptance of virtual workshops, and crossed over $1 million. Catalyse won some big projects in the education, real estate, consulting, technology and arts sectors, which highlights the diversity of sectors investing in D&I training and consulting.

Our profit margin was substantial at almost 46%, mainly due to a skeletal full-time team running the show, with external consultants for bigger projects. This arrangement reduced fixed costs, though it is not sustainable for the long run. For the physical and mental well-being of the team members, more full-time staff for the diverse team functions is highly recommended.

Modes of Delivery

Most of Catalyse’s 2021 workshops were virtual. We conducted a grand total of 131 virtual workshops and 21 in-person workshops, with a whopping total of 13,559 participants.

The exceptionally high numbers of people reached via workshop resulted from an increase in virtual workshops, which were each attended by an average of 800 persons. Whilst these workshops met clients’ needs to ensure wide coverage for their communities, it should be noted that they were not the usual in-depth workshops that Catalyse usually delivers.

New Products

We introduced four new workshops in 2021: “Diversity & Inclusion 101”, “Allyship”, “Bystander Training for Managing Professional Boundaries” and “Advisor Programme for Building an Inclusive and Respectful Campus”.

We also introduced a Mandarin version of our popular “Managing Professional Boundaries” workshop, and rolled it out to clients across APAC.

Other services developed and facilitated for the consulting arm of Catalyse included a “Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (DIB) Journey”. This is an end-to-end service which helps to diagnose the current state of DIB in an organisation through primary research and secondary interventions. Leadership immersion workshops provide insights for future DIB strategies. The service culminates in a “DIB Dashboard” with a corresponding DIB action plan.

Catalyse also wrote an anti-harassment policy for a leading Government organisation in Singapore.

Building on Catalyse’s entry into the global market in 2020, we expanded virtual training and consulting to North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Indonesia in 2021.

Lastly, we launched a refreshed Catalyse website, leading to an increase in visitor numbers.
