The Time Traveller’s Ball

AWARE’s annual ball is a much-awaited event each year, promising a wonderful evening of delicious food and drinks, great company and irreverent fun.

The Time Traveller’s Ball is a gala fundraiser that supports all of our critical programmes, including the Women’s Helpline and Sexual Assault Care Centre, as well as our research and advocacy programmes, which promote changes in laws, policy and cultural attitudes to achieve gender equality.

We aim to raise at least $400,000 to continue our groundbreaking work in championing gender equality in Singapore. See what we have achieved in 2018 here. Cash donations and table purchases are entitled to 250% tax deduction. Plus, this year, AWARE receives 1:1 donation matching from Singapore’s Bicentennial Fund for all funds raised from our donors.

Our Helpline receives more than 3,000 calls each year. It has been a lifeline for women in need for 25 years. In just the past year, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of Helpline calls (32%), Sexual Assault cases (57%) and counselling cases (47%).

Your contribution to the Ball will help us meet the increased demand for our services, and also increase our advocacy efforts for more support for single parents and lower-income women.

200 Years of Alamaks

Our all-time favourite entertainer, Pam Oei, will host this year’s show with award-winning comedian Rishi Budhrani. The well-loved Alamak Awards return with a twist as we showcase Singapore’s most atrocious and ridiculous sexist moments—from the last 200 years. This year’s special edition 200 Years of Alamaks will be written and directed by the prodigiously talented team of Joel Tan, Jo Tan and Elaine Chan.

Pam Oei, Host

Pam has been in over 80 theatre, television and film productions and is known equally for being a dramatic and comedic actor, and is probably most recognised for being one third of the Dim Sum Dollies, Singapore’s most popular comedy cabaret act. In 2006, she produced and directed AWARE’s 25th anniversary fundraiser Superwomen in Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall that raised $350,000 in a single night. Pam is also the lead singer of Singaporean rock band Ugly in the Morning.

Rishi Budhrani, Host

 

Rishi Budhrani, Host

Rishi became the first Singaporean to win the Hong Kong International Comedy Competition and perform at the Gotham Comedy Club in NYC. Rishi has been seen in Dream Academy’s Happy Ever Laughter and was the comedian-host of the annual hit comedy, Kings and Queen of Comedy Asia 2015. He featured in Comedy Central Asia’s first ever original TV showcase Stand-up Asia, and was a regular panelist/writer for Singapore’s first ever live comedy panel show on Channel 5 titled OK CHOPE!

Jo Tan, Theatre Director

 

Jo Tan, Theatre Director

Jo is an actress, singer and host who trained in Paris, and has performed in various cities including New York, London, Beijing and Yeosu. Her performance in Checkpoint Theatre’s Frago scored a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Life! Theatre Awards 2018. She was a lead character alongside Elvin Ng and Felicia Chin in Mediacorp’s Channel 5 sitcom 20 Days. Her first full length script, Forked, has already received two stagings, with more of her original scripts set to be staged both this and next year.

Elaine Chan, Music Director

Elaine is an award-winning composer-arranger-director, whose cred includes popular theatre productions such as Dim Sum Dolly, Wild Rice’s Aladdin and Toy Factory’s The Morning People. She is also known for directing the music at National Day Parade.

Joel Tan, Writer

 

Joel Tan, Writer

Joel is a playwright. Currently based in London, he is an Associate Artist with Checkpoint Theatre (Singapore), and a resident of Theatre 503 (London). Recent work in Singapore includes Tango (Pangdemonium), Cafe (20 Something Theatre Festival), Mosaic (M1 Fringe Festival), and The Emperor’s New Clothes (Wildrice). He is delighted to be working with AWARE for the very first time.
