Item 100
Kate Spade bag, from Ms Tin Pei Ling
Reserve price: $500.00
Think politics and purses are an odd fit? Think again.
Former British prime minister Margaret Thatchers handbag became such a symbol of her leadership style that in the 1980s the term handbagging entered the Oxford English Dictionary, where its described as verbally attacking a person or idea ruthlessly and forcefully. Her most famous bag, a black Asprey, was auctioned for charity last year for US$39,000.
On the other side of the Atlantic, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is known to be deeply fond of her roomy pink Ferragamo tote in particular, and of handbags in general.
I think no one should make fun of anyone elses handbag choices. I think [women] should be united in our support of one another, Mrs Clinton once said during an interview. Because [handbags are] like a deep psychological need. Its a desire to kind of organize and contain that which is important to you in your daily life.
Here in Singapore, there is one handbag that has had its fair share of the political limelight. And it now reappears – to help raise funds for AWAREs work!
One of the defining images of the 2011 General Election was the photograph of political candidate Ms Tin Pei Ling posing with the box for her Kate Spade handbag. It was a lightning rod, attracting everything from criticism of her candidacy to misogynist vitriol.
Ms Tin has now very kindly donated her Kate Spade bag for the AWARE Auction. The item is in mint condition.
Explaining why she was happy to offer her bag for auction, Ms Tin said: In the course of my work in the community, I have met many women, from single mothers to the elderly, who need help and support. I hope that the proceeds from this bag will help to sustain AWAREs crisis Helpline, Sexual Assault Befrienders Service, Legal Clinic and counselling services for women. These are laudable efforts to help women in Singapore. This particular bag received much publicity during the last GE, and I hope to put it to good use. When AWARE approached me and asked to put it up for auction, I saw this as an opportunity to raise funds for a very worthy cause.
